3.5.11
Can you believe it is March already? So I lost my camera. Well probably more correctly my children were taking some goofy pictures of the movie they were watching or each other and put it somewhere I have not yet discovered. So I did have two pictures I wanted to share but don't remember what they were of. They were cute and descriptive of something. So you just get a few stories from the week.
1. Today Mark had a substitute teacher in his class. Lucky for him grandma Saunders was the gracious guest teacher of the 3 turning 4 year olds. For 45 minutes. This is a daunting task for anyone even a pro like her. So we asked the good parent question Mark what did you learn in class today. Knowing that grandma is a scholar and excellent teacher I was just waiting to hear what she had imparted to these eager minds. He said "She taught us to turn in circles, run across the grass and touch the cement!" What Mark "She taught us to turn in circles, run across the grass and touch the cement!" So we chuckled and decided to ask again later when his after church play wouldn't be clouding his mind. After an hour or so we re-questioned him and he gave the same reply. I asked Grandma and she said the lesson had been about water and so they watered the grass and flowers and trees and that three year olds have about a three minute attention span so they did in fact do as Mark replied. They were working on obeying so they could stay outside in the nice weather and play some more. He had a great time and is in fact a pro at turning circles and running on the grass!
2. John and I went to feed the neighbors chickens quickly 20 minutes before we were supposed to load up and head to Ontario for a birthday party. We got there and got started and the chickens wandered out of the pen in a mad dash for rocks and green sprouts coming up in the yard. We spent the next 20 minutes chasing, batting, cajoling, and walking chickens down their assigned path back to the pen. I missed Harold and MArk and Addy a lot. Usually when the chickens get out I have 3 or 4 helpers and they don't tire as easily as mom. John was a fearless helper but when a particularly frightened chicken took flight on his face he was done. THey have really strong wings and are not fun to catch. I did learn that the rooster must go in first as he will call the girls back in and they are not so brave when he is not out with them. I also learned that they must go on the same assigned path they always go on no new ways into the pen. So we got them in and under control before the calvary showed up and phew I had my exercise for the day. Darn chickens. I see why people ate chicken for sunday dinner I would have rang some necks if I would have gotten that close to them.
3. Yesterday we scrap booked for hours. Harold was upset he didn't have any pictures of himself as a small child. So we went to work and came up with pages of Harold's childhood way back in the olden days. It was fun to look back when we looked so young. And as Harold says he was adorable. It was also really neat to do this with him and Anna. They were great helps at cutting, arranging, and taping. We haven't done a project like this ever and it continues to amaze me how capable and mature they are getting. Because we have had a 2 year old for 6 years now and the succeeding ages I forget that the older ones are capable of so much more. Anna is more crafty than I and so this was more her kind of thing. I need to spend more time doing things she likes not just things I like. So this week I will try to get the supplies to make some of those super popular hair flowers as she has done that with her aunts and would like some of her own. Being nine her time here is halfway gone. Odd as it seems in cold facts she's half down with her life sentence here.
4. This week Aliza got a Star Award for being the only student at a school assembly who knew and could recite the golden rule. We were very proud of her and thankful that we had covered that in a family home evening lesson. I'm pretty sure at least Harold was there but not sure if the upper grades were or not. Anyway as a result she got a free ice cream cone from the local Dairy Queen. Meaning the family accompanied her to share in her reward. What a great business tool. As they get a lot of sales along with the one free one. We enjoyed celebrating with her and Grandma and Papa Corn and Aunt Rachel.
4. We had a funeral for a friend this week Mr. Dale Wilkins. He was a teacher of Greg's who later become a customer and friend to our family. When Aliza was discussing why he had died with me she said well he was really old he was born in the 1990's. I laughed my kids think anything pre 2000 is just ancient. I guess it is to them. Funny where your perspective is. The funeral has made us take stock in where we are at and where we are going.
There is a scripture in Proverbs 4:26 " Ponder the path of thy feet..." I have been doing this lately. And when I heard the scripture and returned from the funeral I was not sure my path was anywhere worth coming to my funeral. Not that I'm bad or doing terrible things but what am I doing. I mean there will be the same general laundry to do tomorrow. The same dishes to wash a menu to prepare. People to bug/ call and talk to I don't have much to talk about right? but then tonight chasing those darn chickens and enjoying a brief conversation with John who was so proud of himself opening the door on the pickup for me to "serve Jesus."
I may not be famous I may see no more world landmarks or historical places. But I do love being a mom for these moments. So my path may be very normal or blah but it is my path and I do know it is important to my families health and welfare that I keep moving on.
So with those few stories and insights we leave you for another week
